Yes, I believe he did actually uttered those words to her at least once. It’s funny how whenever he called to Rita he would say, “Hey you.” among other detached responses.
Maybe he said it to Deb, not Rita. I’d have to go back and rewatch….Another touching episode with Dexter showing some emotion for the kids as they leave. I cried. Very moving and makes his character all the more endearing despite his predilection for killing.
He has never said it to anyone — I’ve been watching for that from the beginning because I wondered just how far he would go to “blend in”.
It’s one of the weird little dignities of this character — he’ll lie quite readily about where he’s been, he will break and enter, plant evidence, manipulate people, and of course there’s the little matter of kidnapping, murder, desecration of corpses, destruction of felony evidence and environmental crime (illegal dumping of human remains at sea… not nice).
But he will not lie about how he feels. “Me too” was the closest he got — the marriage proposal was really all about admitting how much he needed them, which is charmingly vulnerable but ultimately self-serving — he never claimed anything he didn’t feel. His marriage vow was carefully constructed so as to be “utterly honest”.
I think he never said that he loved Rita because he didn’t, or didn’t realize that what he felt was love — once again, the strange emotional language the humans use. That’s why it’s such a big deal in “My Bad” when he says at the funeral that he needs to be among “the people who knew her, cared about her, loved her…” and then thinks to himself “… like I did.” It’s the first time he’s recognized that capacity in himself.
And that’s what fascinates me about this show — the plot is just a mechanism for the ultimate coming-of-age story, a sociopath becoming human. His life as a monster was disturbingly idyllic, very black and white, no complicated emotions or responsibilities. Then Rita offers him something he thought he could never have, he decides against every instinct to take it, and nothing is ever as simple again. It’s like the story of the Garden of Eden. Except with plastic wrap and very very sharp knives.

Both players are saying blocked or removed, but the VideoBB then suggests you should sign up for premium, although thats not the problem. Misleading to some. Did they pull the videos from you?
The show owners are being very diligent in removing the streams from the video hosters, this has really kicked off within the last week or so. They are removing them faster than I can replace!

I actually remember he says it to Astor in a later episode of this season. May be because he connecting better with children. More power to Dexter.
