Now, where were we? Ah, yes. In the first 2 minutes of Season 7 of DEXTER we are transported squarely back to the minute where Season 6 left off. Debra has just walked in on Dexter making the kill on Travis. The knife is still wet with blood, Dexter is standing over the body, and Debra saw the killing. There isn’t much denial that Dexter can do at this point.

It isn’t clear how Dexter will react. Will he come clean to his sister? Doubtful, at least not at first. What possible excuse can he come up with? As the first 2 minutes unravel we see him try to use the death of his wife as an excuse for pushing him over the edge. But when Debra tells Dexter that she needs to call her team in then we aren’t sure what Dexter will do. He clearly needs to stop her. But how? If words don’t work, will he use force on his sister? Violent force? As a viewer, we aren’t sure how far Dexter will go. Dexter probably isn’t sure, himself. How strong is his desire for survival versus the life of his sister? Perhaps there is a middle ground? Watch!

Nor, will it have to [...]]]> Dexter Season 7 is set to begin this Sunday, September 30th and it can’t come a moment too soon! In this post, I would like to review the major question mark for the upcoming season. In my opinion, the biggest question mark is not how Deb’s brother-crush will play out. Nor, will it have to do with whether Dexter can be a good father, a good employee for Miami Police (his heart wasn’t really into his work last season!) and whether he can quiet his dark passenger. No, the huge question mark: how will Dexter and Deb deal with knowing his secret? Dexter is a serial killer. This changes everything, including the viewing experience of the audience.

If we view Dexter as a dark superhero: someone who protects the innocent by punishing the super-baddies that the police can’t bring to justice on their own, then we can view Dexter’s ‘coming out’ to Debra as the superhero equivalent of Clark Kent revealing to Lois Lane that he is, well, Superman.
Usually, this is the kiss of death for the audience. Lois Lane is not supposed to know that Clark is Superman. Secret identities are meant to remain secret for the sake of dramatic tension. Think of all your favorite television couples, before and after they finally got together on the show. Ross and Rachel are not meant to be together. They are funnier, more engaging when they yearn for each other.  The same goes with superheroes and their secret identities.

 

I am worried that this will sap the tension from the show. However, I’m also relieved this has happened. Season 6 wasn’t very good. Let’s be honest. So, there isn’t as much to ‘ruin’ at this point and the idea of Debra being his accomplice has juicy dramatic possibilities. Dexter is not, after all, Superman. Dexter is a murderer. And Debra is a police officer and her brother’s boss. Will Deb start relying on Dexter for secret missions: turning him into a more legitimate Sherlock Holmes? Will she still love her brother? Lastly, it is exciting to finally have someone credible learn about Dexter’s identity. Will she love him like the audience does? Or see him as a criminal to be brought in for justice?
